Police in Ho Chi Minh City questioned two men who provide hoverboard renting services on Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street in downtown Ho Chi Minh City for allegedly overcharging American content creator and YouTuber IshowSpeed, an official told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Saturday night.
Officers in Ben Nghe Ward, District 1 summoned the two men to a police station for questioning a few hours after a video showing them overcharging the rapper went viral on social media.
IshowSpeed live-streamed his visit in Ho Chi Minh City, including his experience of being fleeced on Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street, on Facebook.
The live video was attracting 169,000 viewers when the renowned streamer was ovecharged for renting a self-balancing board on the walking street.
The video showed a man quoting the foreigner US$100 for renting the hoverboard.
Though the streamer paused for a moment, he then agreed and signed for his staff to give him money to pay.
While he was holding cash to make the payment, another man reduced the fee and charged him VND1 million ($40.8) for a hoverboard.
As a result, the 19-year-old rapper rented the self-balancing board at VND1 million for a few minutes.
The two men’s act of ripping off the foreigner sparked outrage on social media.
Users expressed concern that such behavior tarnishes the image of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and its people, while also potentially harming the city's tourism industry.
IshowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., is well known as an American YouTuber, online streamer, and rapper.
Le Duc Thanh, chairman of the District 1 People’s Committee, announced on Saturday night that the administration had instructed the Ben Nghe Ward People’s Committee to reach out to IshowSpeed to apologize for the incident and reimburse him for being overcharged on Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street.
