Ho Chi Minh City and several provinces in southern Vietnam could be drenched by widespread downpours over the next few days, according to the local hydro-meteorological agency.
The agency is forecasting rainfall of 50-100mm across the city and such provinces as Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, and Dong Nai between 7:00 pm on Sunday and 7:00 pm on Tuesday this week.
Intense rainfall and high tides will likely cause inundation in low-lying and riverside areas and potential flooding of the Dong Nai - La Nga river system.
Earlier, widespread downpours had lashed the Ca Mau- Kien Giang peninsula, Ho Chi Minh City, and the northern part of the southeastern region from 3:00 pm on Saturday to 3:00 pm on Sunday, with precipitation ranging between 45mm and 85mm.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that massive rains in the southern and Central Highlands regions could persist until Wednesday or Thursday.
The national weather agency attributed this weather pattern to an intensifying southwest monsoon and a low-pressure trough, previously forecasted to travel from the north-central region to central Vietnam between September 13 and 14 before gathering strength.
