Many roads near the old Mien Dong (Eastern) bus station in Binh Thanh District were clogged with traffic, leaving vehicles with no exit on Tuesday evening.

Drone photos provided an aerial view of extreme traffic jams on Nguyen Gia Tri, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh, Ung Van Khiem, and Nguyen Xi Streets.

They also showed a traffic bottleneck at Dien Bien Phu Street heading to the Saigon Bridge, and the Ung Van Khiem - Nguyen Gia Tri intersection gridlocked for a few hours.

At 8:00 pm, many vehicles were still stuck on several routes across the district.

Phan Van Khi, a resident of Binh Thanh District, said the traffic congestion started at 3:00 pm due to intense rain and flooding on some streets.

At rush hour, the traffic jams got worse.

Pilot program underway for smart traffic lights

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport is working with some relevant units to expand a pilot program to install smart traffic lights to help ease congestion.

Accordingly, many intersections will be equipped with a camera system used to scan traffic flows and automatically adjust signal lights.

The pilot program is being implemented at Hang Xanh Roundabout and the Ung Van Khiem - Nguyen Gia Tri intersection in Binh Thanh District to reduce the need for traffic police officers to manage traffic flow.
