Ho Chi Minh City experienced a severe thunderstorm on Tuesday afternoon, with hundreds of thunderclaps crashing across the city in just over an hour.
Le Dinh Quyet, head of the forecasting department at the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center, explained that a low-pressure trough exists from six to 10 degrees north of the equator.
In Ho Chi Minh City, humidity converges in the trough to form clouds, while subtropical high pressure often raises ground air temperatures.
As temperature and humidity in Ho Chi Minh City were high, while convective resistance energy was low, the city hosted a prime environment for convection, which caused heavy rains, thunder, and lightning in the southern metropolis.
Quyet warned local residents against parking vehicles or seeking shelter under trees during rain and advised them to stay away from conductive objects to prevent lightning strikes.
He also suggested that people limit their mobile phone useage and disconnect electric devices during thunderstorms.
In the coming days, moderate to heavy rains will lash Ho Chi Minh City and the southern region as a whole.
From October 14 onward, downpours are mainly forecasts to hit the city in the afternoons and evenings.
