A mentally-ill man brandishing a gun-shaped object stopped vehicles and threatened commuters, causing mayhem on a street in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday afternoon.

A video showing the allegedly aggressive behavior surfaced on Vietnamese social media on Sunday.

In the short video, the man was riding his motorcycle on a local street when he pointed the gun-shaped object at commuters and stopped several vehicles, panicking residents.

Many road users felt too scared to stop their vehicles or turn around and flee.

An official from the People’s Committee of An Lac Ward in Binh Tan District told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the incident happened at 4:50 pm on Saturday.

After being notified of the case, some police officers in the ward quickly approached the scene on Kinh Duong Vuong Street to overpower the man and seize the allegedly dangerous object.

The man was captured at Gate 2 of Mien Tay (Western) Bus Station on the street.

The object resembling a gun was identified as a broken toy gun.

A family member of the man, identified as N.T.P., who lives in Binh Tri Dong Ward in the district, said that the 31-year-old man has been receiving treatment for mental illness for four years.

He tested negative for drugs, so the police permitted his family to take him home for care and supervision.
