CCTV clears theft claim in S.Korean tourist's $2,000 loss: Vietnam airport official
A screenshot of a Facebook post details a case where a South Korean tourist was purportedly pickpocketed at Cam Ranh International Airport in Khanh Hoa Province, located in south-central Vietnam.

An official at Cam Ranh International Airport in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam has affirmed that security camera footage shows no one tampering with the handbag of a South Korean tourist who had previously reported losing U.S. and South Korean banknotes equivalent to US$2,000.

The official told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday that the airport management board had received a report about a South Korean passenger being pickpocketed near a restroom at the airport.

After reviewing the security camera footage, the airport staff discovered no one touched the tourist’s handbag, the official said, adding that the international tourist was not robbed at the airport.

On Sunday afternoon, a Facebook account, named H.T.T., posted a status reading, “My South Korean customer was pickpocketed of over VND50 million [US$2,000] in front of a restroom near a baggage carousel at the international terminal of Cam Ranh International Airport. Could you please tell me how to review camera footage and to whom I should report the case?”

T., a resident of Nha Trang City in Khanh Hoa Province who shared the information on her Facebook page, explained that a South Korean man had lunch at her restaurant on Sunday.

Afterward, he discovered that he had lost his money and asked for her help in reporting the theft to the airport.

The South Korean customer told her that he had placed his handbag on an empty chair near a restroom at Cam Ranh International Airport before going to the toilet.

After he returned to his bag, he took a taxi to Nha Trang City, some 35 kilometers from the airport, T. recounted.

The foreigner discovered he had lost U.S. and South Korean banknotes worth VND50 million while he was having lunch at the restaurant.

The customer asked T. to help report the case to local authorities in hopes of recovering the lost cash.

Unsure of who to contact, she posted the case on Facebook, seeking support and guidance from the community.

An airport official told Tuoi Tre that after someone reported the case to the airport’s information desk, security forces swiftly reviewed all the cameras and closely examined footage from a camera near the location where the South Korean tourist claimed to have been pickpocketed.

“We reviewed the footage from all security cameras, discovering that the tourist’s handbag, backpack, and other belongings remained unchanged. The tourist then got in a white car and left the airport,” the official elaborated.

The official reiterated that airport security reviewed footage from security cameras to track the tourist’s movements, from outside the restroom to the parking lot.

“We found no evidence of theft at the airport, but it’s possible the tourist lost his money on the plane,” the official said.

He advised passengers to be mindful of their belongings but noted that if items are lost, they can report the incident to airport staff for assistance.
