A Chinese citizen driving an SUV loaded with smuggled cigarettes was arrested after a 10-kilometer chase through Ho Chi Minh City on Monday.
At 2:00 pm, a traffic police patrol team attempted to stop the car for running a red light at the intersection of Nguyen Huu Canh Street and Pham Viet Chanh Street in Binh Thanh District.
Instead of complying, the driver sped off.
The police team pursued the white Toyota Fortuner to Nguyen Van Lac Street, where it briefly stopped, and a woman exited the vehicle.
The driver then accelerated again, heading toward Dien Bien Phu Street and crossing the Saigon Bridge into Vo Nguyen Giap Street in Thu Duc City.
Another police team in Thu Duc was notified of the situation and set up a roadblock, but the driver ignored orders to stop and headed toward the Thu Duc Intersection. Officers then used specialized motorcycles to give chase.
The pursuit ended at the Tay Hoa Intersection in Thu Duc’s Phuoc Long A Ward where heavy traffic forced the SUV to halt.
Officers approached the car with guns drawn and apprehended the driver. They found the car packed with many sacks and cartons containing smuggled cigarettes.
At 3:40 pm, the driver, vehicle, and confiscated items were taken to a police station for further investigation.
