A man was fined VND35 million (US$1,379) and had 10 points deducted from his driver's license for making a U-turn on a two-lane section of the Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway in northern Vietnam on Friday.
A traffic police team from the Traffic Police Department under Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security issued the fine against T.N.T., a 28-year-old resident in Hanoi, on Saturday.
After receiving reports about the case, traffic police officers verified the incident and later identified the driver.
T. said that at around 12:30 pm on Friday, he was driving a car on the expressway toward Lao Cai, he made a U-turn due to taking the wrong direction.
The expressway section where he made the U-turn has two lanes and has no central concrete divider.
He said that he used Google Maps, but he did not know how to read it properly, so he went in the wrong direction and had to turn around.
He admitted his act posed traffic safety risks and promised not to repeat this.
The Hanoi-Lao Cai Expressway spans more than 260 kilometers, passing through Hanoi and Vinh Phuc Province, Phu Tho Province, Yen Bai Province, and Lao Cai Province.
The section through Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, and Yen Bai is designed to have four lanes, with a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour.

This section has been in operation for over 10 years but has not been upgraded or expanded.
