The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) on Wednesday announced that it had been handed a fine by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) after failing to prevent their fans from setting off flares during a 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Cambodia on September 5.
The fine amounted to $15,000, according to the VFF statement.
A VFF official reported that at least two fireworks were set off by Vietnamese supporters.
The Vietnamese beat the hosts 2-1 in that game.
Vietnam now rank second in Group C of the third round of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification, earning the same eight points as leaders Jordan after four games, followed by Cambodia and Afghanistan.
This is not the first time the VFF has been fined by the AFC.
Just last year, a $38,000 fine was slapped on the organization after Vietnamese fans broke the Indonesian team’s bus windows in Hanoi.
