​Vietnam bags first Asian Games medals in Taekwondo, shooting

Vietnamese athletes completed Day 1 at the 2018 Asian Games (Asiad) in Indonesia on Sunday with two bronze medals in shooting and Taekwondo.

As of 11:00 am on Monday, Vietnam ranked 15th out of 45 countries participating in the August 18 - September 2 continental competition.

The first-ever medal for Team Vietnam in Indonesia went to Taekwondo athletes Nguyen Thien Phung, Le Thanh Trung, and Tran Tien Khoa in the men’s team poomsae event. South Korea claimed the gold medal, while China took the silver.

Vietnam’s Teakwondo team was unable to enter the semi-final in the women’s team poomsae and women’s individual categories.

Vietnamese shooters Tran Quoc Cuong and Le Thi Linh Chi won the second bronze medal, scoring 407.5 points in the 10-meter air pistol mixed team event.

Chinese athletes sealed the overall victory with 473.2 points, while South Korea came in second with 467.6 points.

Vietnam was scheduled to continue competing in other events of Taekwondo and shooting on Monday, along with swimming, weightlifting, Wushu, and gymnastics.

The 2018 Asian Games takes place in Indonesia from August 18 to September 2 with the theme “Energy of Asia.”

Vietnam’s sports delegation to the Games consists of 532 members, including 352 athletes. It aims to snatch at least three gold medals, with at least one in an Olympic sport.
