Ethiopians win men’s, women’s marathon in Da Nang

Two Ethiopian athletes won the men’s and women’s 42-kilometer distance at the Manulife Da Nang International Marathon 2023 in the namesake central city on Sunday.

They also set new records for both men’s and women’s full marathon.

Takele Ebisa finished the men’s marathon in two hours, 26 minutes, and 11 seconds, breaking the previous record of two hours, 32 minutes, and 16 seconds set by a Japanese athlete.

Ebisa was followed by Kipsang Charles Kipkorir from Kenya and Tran Duy Quang from Vietnam.

For women’s marathon, Birehan Marta Tinsae dominated the 42-kilometer race with two hours, 58 minutes, and 26 seconds.

Vietnamese runner Duong Thi Khanh came in second in three hours, 12 minutes, and 48 seconds, and Japanese Uchino Satomi ranked third, clocking three hours, 21 minutes, and 24 seconds.

In the men’s 21-kilometer race, Vietnamese runner Pham Tien San finished first in one hour, 17 minutes, and 14 seconds, followed by his countrymen—Le Van Thanh and Trinh Minh Tam, who ranked second and third, respectively.

For the women’s half marathon, Kenyan athlete Shelmith Muriuki Nyawira was the winner after completing the distance in one hour, 21 minutes, and 53 seconds.

Vietnamese runners—Thai Thi Kim Ngan and Le Thi Kha Ly—claimed the first and second runner-up positions.

Winners of the 42- and 21-kilometer races will participate in the Kuala Lumpur Marathon in Malaysia in late September.

The fastest male and female Vietnamese athletes competing in the full marathon category win slots to the Sydney Marathon.

The Manulife Da Nang International Marathon 2023 attracted 9,000 athletes, including 1,500 foreigners from 50 countries and territories.

The 10th edition of the competition boasted five races, including a 42-kilometer full marathon, a 21-kilometer half marathon, a 10-kilometer race, a five-kilometer distance, and a 1.5-kilometer Ronny Dash run for kids aged between three and 10.

The route of the 42-kilometer full marathon passed through two of the longest and most beautiful coastal roads in Da Nang, including Vo Nguyen Giap and Nguyen Tat Thanh.
