Vietnam is trailing behind other Southeast Asian nations in the current medal count at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

At the top of the medal tally, China established its dominance with an impressive number of 59 gold medals, 34 silvers, and 13 bronzes as of 3:00 pm on Wednesday, the fourth official competition day at the quadrennial continental sporting event.

This accomplishment significantly outperformed the South Korean delegation, which earned 15 gold medals, 16 silvers, and 22 bronzes, as well as Japan, which secured nine gold medals, 21 silvers, and 21 bronzes.

Out of the Southeast Asian nations, Thailand currently takes the temporary lead as it occupies the seventh position in the medal standings, bagging five gold medals, one silver, and seven bronzes.

The Thai athletes won three gold medals in sailing.

The other two gold medals came from the men’s 63kg and women’s 49kg weight divisions in taekwondo.

Indonesia is behind Thailand in the eighth place, having earned three gold medals, one silver, and five bronzes.

Among Indonesia’s three gold medals, two were earned by shooter Putra Muhammad Sejahtera Dwi in the men’s 10m running target and 10m running target mixed run events, marking the first-ever gold medals in the history of Indonesian shooting in the Asian Games arena.

The third gold medal went to to wushu athlete Horatius Harris.

Malaysia, boasting one gold medal, two silvers, and four bronzes, currently holds the 12th position. Their only gold was secured by female sailor Binti Mohamad Latif Nur Shazrin.

Singapore, with two silver medals and four bronzes, is temporarily sharing the 18th place with Mongolia.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese delegation can hardly compete with these regional counterparts.

Vietnam currently holds the 20th spot in the rankings, having obtained just one silver medal and five bronzes.

Their sole silver medal was clinched by shooter Ngo Huu Vuong in the men’s 10m running target event.

Vietnam dispatched a delegation of 504 participants and coaches, including 320 athletes, to the 19th Asian Games, which feature a total of 40 sports and 481 events, with a target of winning at least two gold medals before the tournament concludes on October 8.
