Ho Chi Minh City Women’s Football Club defeated Taichung Blue Whale from Taiwan 3-1 on Sunday evening in their opening match in Group C of the 2024-25 AFC Women’s Champions League.

Despite striker Huynh Nhu’s brilliance, the audience at Thong Nhat Stadium in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City waited 50 minutes before celebrating the first goal from Ho Chi Minh City Women’s FC.

Taichung Blue Whale, recognizing the talent of Huynh Nhu and her teammates, opted for a solid defensive strategy.

Nguyen Thi Tuyet Ngan broke the deadlock, putting Ho Chi Minh City Women’s FC in the lead.

The fans eagerly anticipated Huynh Nhu to strike and were rewarded in the 65th minute.

She headed a pass from the right wing to double the score, marking her first goal in the 2024-25 AFC Women’s Champions League.

Just two minutes later, Huynh Nhu netted again, making it 3-0 after a clever setup from Meghan Root.

After scoring the goal, Huynh Nhu appeared to be in pain and was unable to celebrate, exiting the field in the 70th minute and being replaced by veteran midfielder Tran Thi Thuy Trang.

Thuy Trang came close to extending the lead, hitting the post with a powerful right-footed shot.

In the 85th minute, Taichung Blue Whale pulled one back with a goal from Ke Sin Huang, but the match ended 3-1 in the hosts' favor.

After a strong start in the tournament, Ho Chi Minh City Women's FC will clash with India’s Odisha FC on Wednesday.

The 2024-25 AFC Women’s Champions League is the first edition of Asia’s premier club women’s football tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

In the group stage, three groups of four teams compete at the venues of the host teams.

The knockout stage will follow a single-elimination format, with the semifinals and final held at a centralized location.

Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City Women’s FC host Group C and are matched against Urawa Red Diamonds from Indonesia, Taichung Blue Whale, and Odisha FC Women.
