The 2023 Oscar nomination list has honored two Vietnamese-born actors, Quan Ke Huy and Hong Chau, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday evening (local time).
Quan Ke Huy, also known as Jonathan Ke Quan, 52, won the Best Supporting Actor nomination for a movie in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ which has so far gained 11 Oscar nominations, marking a milestone for the representation of Asia in the world’s film industry.
The movie is a 2022 American absurdist comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
In the film, Quan Ke Huy successfully plays Waymond Wang, the gentle and quirky husband of the female lead Evelyn Quan played by Michelle Yeoh Choo Kheng, a Malaysian actress.
Born in a Chinese-Vietnamese family in 1971 in Saigon, the old name of Ho Chi Minh City, Huy and his relatives left Vietnam for the U.S. to settle down there when he was seven.
Huy has been known for appearing in the second episode of the Indiana Jones series - one of the very famous movie franchises in the 1980s in Hollywood.
On January 11, Huy won the gold trophy at the 80th Golden Globe Awards in California (the U.S.) also as the best supporting actor, surpassing even American actor Brad Pitt.
Meanwhile, the nomination for the Best Supporting Actress went to Hong Chau, a 43-year-old Vietnamese-American actress, for her role in the film ‘The Whale.’

Chau grew up in New Orleans, the U.S., and studied film & television at Boston University before pursuing an acting career.
The actress started her artistic career in 2006 and participated in various works such as Driveways, American Woman, Watchmen, and Homecoming, among others.
Her performance in the movie ‘The Whale’ with Brendan Fraser, an American-Canadian actor, received positive feedback from experts and audiences.
The movie is a 2022 American psychological drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky and written by Samuel D. Hunter, based on his 2012 play of the same name.
She left a strong impression in the audience when she transforms into a nurse, also a friend trying to save the life of her obese friend, played by Brendan Fraser, or at least keep his life stable.
In 2017, Hong Chau was expected by many to be nominated for the Golden Globe Award for her supporting role in the well-known movie ‘Downsizing,’ but she suddenly was not named at the last minute.
As making up for her, Chau was honored by Variety magazine in the list of 10 Actresses to Watch in the same year.
The 95th Oscar award ceremony will take place in Hollywood, Los Angeles, the U.S., on March 12.
