Geriatric walls along an alley on Nguyen Dinh Chinh Street in Phu Nhuan District under Ho Chi Minh City have been transformed into brightly colored murals by locals and volunteer painters.

These eye-catching paintings resulted from a contest titled ‘Green Corner – Green Space,’ which was held in the district to make the place more lively and dynamic.

Several firms responded to the program by growing trees and decorating their workplaces, shops, and restaurants.

Many schools in the district are ablaze with green space and colorful drawings.

Alley 195 on Nguyen Dinh Chinh Street had earlier seen trash pile up.

After the People’s Committee of Ward 11 in the district launched the environmental protection initiative, the alleyway has become beautiful thanks to the flowered walls.

Pham My Hoa, a resident of the district, said that due to several spontaneous rubbish dumps in her ward, she and other neighbors called on volunteers and philanthropists to beautify the streets and prevent littering.

No one is now throwing waste at a place surrounded by trees and covered with lovely walls.

Ho Van Hue Elementary School in Ward 9 has planted various trees to create an airy playground and an eco-friendly reading space for students, said vice-principal Tran Thi Minh Trang.

Each class has its own corner of nature decorated by students and teachers.

Tran Bao Toan, head of the Phu Nhuan District Division of Natural Resources and Environment, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that after four months of its launch, the program attracted the participation of nearly 250 units.

Among them are private businesses and worship facilities such as pagodas and churches.

Several streets are kept clean, while 410 cubic meters of construction waste was removed, as a result of the initiative.

In addition, the district is seeing green coverage increase, with thousands of trees having been grown, while beds of flowers were formed.

As many as 200 deteriorating structures have been upgraded, contributing to making the district more gorgeous.

The district will roll out tree-planting and waste-collecting competitions in the future, he said.
