More than 1,000 women in Dong Ha City under Quang Tri Province, located in north-central Vietnam, took part in a dance ensemble and an ao dai (Vietnamese traditional costume) performance at a local square on Sunday morning to celebrate the upcoming International Women’s Day (March 8).

The event, held by the Dong Ha City Women’s Union, was aimed at marking the 114th anniversary of International Women’s Day and the 1,984th anniversary of the Hai Ba Trung (Trung Sisters) Uprising.

Besides, the program was meant to honor the value of ao dai, and call on people to preserve and promote Vietnamese cultural heritage.

Pham Thi Thu Ha, chairwoman of the Dong Ha City Women’s Union, said that through the event, the donations of a house worth VND60 million (US$2,400), 20 bicycles, and 1,000 ao dai were sent to disadvantaged women in the city.

“The event spread love for ao dai among women in Quang Tri Province in general and in Dong Ha City in particular," she underlined.

“Affection for ao dai mirrors great patriotism."

Furthermore, the inclusion of folk dances in the event, portraying the daily life of the people, served as a motivating factor for women to participate in sports activities and engage in regular exercise, contributing to the enhancement of their overall health, Ha said.

Luong Thi Dieu Ngan, a local woman, who participated in the ao dai performance, said that she was so proud of Vietnamese ao dai.

“I will wear ao dai at many other events,” she added.
