Middle-aged and elderly members of local sports clubs took part in the group exercise at the National Sports Training Center in the capital city on Saturday.
The activity was meant to celebrate the 71st anniversary of Vietnam’s sports (March 27).
The event was designed to create a playground for senior citizens in the Vietnamese capital to network and spread the healthy lifestyle to the rest of the community.
According to Nguyen Khac Loi, deputy director of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports, working out has become a rising trend among the elderly community in Hanoi, with more and more citizens attracted to the form of exercise.
The event was organized to encourage local residents to take part in fitness activities, Loi added.
The mass workout was kick-started with several artistic and martial art performances, followed by over 5,000 senior citizens simultaneously performing a set of exercises, setting a new record in Vietnam.
The previous record was set by a group of 2,720 elderly residents in Ho Chi Minh City in May 2016.
