Thursday, August 14, 2014, 08:42 GMT+7

Below are some of the main stories published today, August 14, in the Vietnamese press:

Politics:

- In a press release dated August 13, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh said Vietnam strongly protests against Khmer Kampuchea Krom extremists for conducting an illegal demonstration and burning the Vietnamese national flag in Phnom Penh on August 12.

“We request Cambodia to strictly deal with the case in line with the law and adopt effective preventive measures so as to avoid any repeated action," Binh said.

Society:

- The traffic safety surveillance camera system in the whole country has not been efficient, said Pham Dinh Xinh, director of the research center for traffic safety under the Ministry of Public Security at a seminar in the southern city of Bac Lieu. It is because the system is low-tech with low-resolution, he added.

- On August 13, police identified two people who had spread rumor that “Vietnam has had people infected with Ebola at Hanoi’s Bach Mai Hospital” on Facebook on August 11. They are Vu Huong Thao, 23, and Nguyen Thuy Trang, 30, residing in the capital city. The Ministry of Health has denied the rumor, confirming there has been no Ebola infection reported in Vietnam to date.

Business:

- The Ministry of Finance has sent a draft decree on casino management to ministries and agencies for comments to complete the draft. The draft has been updated with an article of allowing Vietnamese residents to gamble at casinos operating in the country. Earlier, the draft has proposed only international punters and foreign passport holders should be allowed to play at the casinos.

- On August 13, the National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department received a dispatch from Russia’s Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service, saying that the Russian agency has lifted suspensions on importing seafood to the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia from seven Vietnamese enterprises. The National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department has asked the companies to follow the regulations on food safety of Vietnam and the Customs Union when producing and exporting products to those countries.

Lifestyle:

- A workshop on film pitching will take place in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in September. The event to be organized by British Council, Yxine Film Fest, and Redbridge aims to support young filmmakers. The best projects will be given funding of VND20 million (US$941) and have chances to join an intensive course.

- MTV Vietnam channel will celebrate its 3rd birthday with a music party on August 14 in Ho Chi Minh City. The event will gather numerous names in the local music industry, promising to bring participants a night of fun with music celebrations. First launched in Vietnam in 2011, the 24-hour music channel owned by MTV Networks Asia has become a familiar destination for young music fans in Vietnam.
