Early this morning, more than 100 police officers from different units raided the largest discotheque in Ho Chi Minh City’s downtown area, finding drug users and questioning alleged drug dealers. At 12:30 am, after rushing into the 02 Gold Club, located on Ho Huan Nghiep Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, police detained disco staff suspected of selling drugs to dancers. Many police officers blocked the entrances and exits of the dancing facility while other officers asked the club’s management to stop its operation for inspection purposes. At that time, although the permitted operating hours for the club were already over, about 200 young dancers were still dancing at the club, and when they saw police, many of them threw away or hid bags containing white powder. Police seized the bags and fast tests later showed that the powder inside them was synthetic drugs, investigators said. Police checked the personal papers of all the dancers in the club and then questioned suspected drug abusers. A report was made by the police about the drugs found and a number of violations committed by the club. Police later escorted a number of alleged providers of drugs to their office for further investigation. 02 Gold Club is a luxurious and expensive club that usually operates overnight in HCMC, attracting hundreds of young men and women every night, authorities said. Reportedly, the club was also inspected by concerned agencies earlier this year.
