Cracks as deep as one meter have appeared along the road

A part of a US$3 million road in the north-central Vietnamese province of Nghe An has been severely damaged by subsidence.

The section belongs to a road project connecting the commemorative houses of former Vietnamese Party chief Le Hong Phong and Pham Hong Thai, a famous revolutionary, located in Hung Chau and Hung Nhan Communes, Hung Nguyen District.

Spanning nearly 5.2 kilometers, the road was built in December 2015 and is expected to be completed in 2018.

The project is worth about VND68 billion ($2.98 million), funded by the People’s Committee in Hung Nguyen, while the construction was carried out by Tan Nam Construction JSC.

According to the observation of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters on October 6, the 100-meter section of the road in Hung Chau was severely damaged.

This part of the road has recently been renovated and expanded from an old road.

Subsidence has caused the road to collapse into multiple layers, while cracks as deep as one meter have also appeared along the surface.

Only motorbikes and bicycles are now able to travel on the road.

The Hung Nguyen administration has asked the provincial People’s Committee to request evaluation and solutions from competent agencies.

The Nghe An Department of Transport has directed Tan Nam Company to drill at five locations of the subsided road section for a geological survey.
