The construction of a US$1.78 billion thermal power plant was initiated in the north-central Vietnamese province of Quang Binh on Monday.
The groundbreaking ceremony of Quang Trach 1 thermal power plant was organized by the state-owned Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN) and Quang Binh authorities on Monday.
Estimated to cost VND41.13 trillion ($1.78 billion), the project covers an area of 48.6 hectares.
The power plant has an installed capacity of 1,200MW.
After being put into operation, it is expected to add about 8.4 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid per year.
The project is anticipated to be finished in 2025.
It will be implemented by a consortium of contractors including several Japanese and South Korean companies and Vietnam’s Construction Corporation No.1 JSC.
Quang Trach 1 thermal power plant will use modern technology, EVN stated, adding that it will have the highest ultra-supercritical (USC) parameters among thermal power plants in Vietnam.
The facility will be equipped with wastewater treatment and exhaust gas and dust filtration systems, thus its emissions will meet the standards promulgated by Vietnam and the World Bank.
The plant’s environmental parameters will be closely monitored by the Quang Binh Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
