U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen made a visit to an electric scooter production factory owned by Vietnamese start-up Selex Motors in Hanoi on Thursday afternoon.
The trip was part of Secretary Yellen’s official visit to Vietnam from Tuesday to Friday.
“The electric scooters and batteries made at the facility are impressive,” said Secretary Yellen, who also shared her admiration for the economic dynamism and business spirit of the Vietnamese people.
According to Secretary Yellen, Selex Motors is an example of a link between the U.S. and Vietnam as two of the company's founders earned their PhD from the University of Michigan in the United States.
She also noted that over 30,000 young Vietnamese people are studying in the United States, putting Vietnam fifth among America’s international student source markets.
Founded in 2018, Selex Motors hopes to boost Vietnam’s sustainable development via electric motorbikes. The start-up is striving to popularize the use of renewable energy for traffic systems.
Selex Motors is among many contributors to the made-in-Vietnam drive.
During her visit to the Selex electric vehicle (EV) production facility, Yellen highlighted the importance of the fight against climate change and the significance of global clean energy transition.
Within the frameworks of her Vietnam visit, she held meetings with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Chairman of the Party Central Committee's Economic Commission Tran Tuan Anh, and Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam Nguyen Thi Hong.
