The first shipment of cooked crabs, farmed in Vietnam’s southernmost province of Ca Mau, has been put up for sale in the U.S..

On Sunday, Doan Thi Anh Thu, CEO of King Crab Trading Service Joint Stock Company, stated that the exported batch was sent to the U.S. through an official channel.

The products are showcased in 200 markets and supermarkets across the U.S. to meet consumer demand.

This marks the initial shipment of a larger order consisting of 21,000 crabs, totaling 11 metric tons, from a U.S. partner, as mentioned by Thu.

These cooked Ca Mau crabs are frozen, boasting a shelf life of 12 months. Consumers need only defrost and heat the crabs before indulging in them.

The product is priced at VND1.3 million (US$53.7) per kilogram.

In the U.S., consumers have a fondness for crabs, but opportunities to enjoy Ca Mau crabs have been limited.

Thu shared that Ca Mau crabs were previously exported to the U.S. market through a third party, without carrying a distinct Vietnamese brand.

Thu said that when Ca Mau crabs are placed on the shelves of supermarkets in the U.S. and gain favor among local consumers, it presents an opportunity to showcase and promote Ca Mau crabs to international audiences.

The U.S. market being discerning, the successful export of this initial batch of cooked crabs will serve as a stepping stone for the shipment of other seafood products, as noted by Thu.

She further emphasized that King Crab is currently directing its attention toward the U.S. and European markets.

The company will expand production and develop other cooked seafood products, such as tiger prawn, white-leg shrimp, squids, and lobsters to serve more customers, the CEO said.

Ca Mau Province has the largest shrimp and crab farming area in Vietnam, at more than 280,000 hectares.

Its total crab revenue reaches nearly VND10 trillion ($413.3 million) per year on average.

Fresh Ca Mau crabs have been exported to China, the U.S., and Japan, among others.
