Ethnic minority dialects face extinction

Ethnic minority dialects face extinction

Tuesday, July 30, 2013, 15:52 GMT+7

The Thua Thien – Hue People’s Committee recently agreed to the compilation of teaching materials on the endangered languages of three ethnic minority groups in the area in an attempt to curb the fast erosion of the tongues.

According to the survey conducted by the provincial Ethnic Committee, among over 6,600 people of Pa Co, Ta Oi and Co Tu minorities, who are teachers, students, local officials and residents in the 11-60 age bracket, almost 6% aren’t fluent in or even ignorant of their own spoken dialects while over 69% don’t know how to write them.

Vietnam has 54 peoples, and the language of Kinh people, who make up the majority of the population, serves as the national one.
