Exquisite items of Vietnamese porcelain have attracted considerable attention at an exhibit running until December 2014 in Singapore.

“China Mania! The Global Passion for Porcelain, 800-1900,” which is running at the Asian Civilizations Museum until December 14, showcases 150 objects, including new acquisitions.

A number of Vietnamese porcelain objects are prominently placed at the exhibit and have received compliments from curators and visitors alike.

One of the highlights is a blue-white Vietnamese porcelain jar which dates back to the 15th century.

According to the exhibit’s organizer, the method used to create the turquoise dye on the Vietnamese porcelain jars remains unknown. This sophisticated, mysterious dying technique was unique in Southeast Asia at the time.

Although the Vietnamese jars are mostly adorned with fish patterns, a style which was inspired by Chinese porcelain between 1271 and 1368, Vietnamese artisans were creative in that the patterns vividly depicted images unique to Southeast Asian arts.

Museum curator Kan Shuyi remarked that Vietnam’s porcelain enjoyed a firm footing in the world’s and Southeast Asia’s porcelain areas.

Starting in the 14th century, the country was one of the biggest producers and exporters of porcelain, Shuyi said.

A number of Vietnamese pieces have been unearthed in the Philippines, Java, Sulawesi, the Malay peninsula, and even Japan and Turkey.

The exhibit looks into how international trade and cultural exchange altered the course of Asian art, particularly porcelain.

It also examines the global demand for porcelain, not only in Europe and America, but also within Asia.
