Ho Chi Minh City is scheduled to launch its first official “food street” next week.
The People’s Committee in District 1 has confirmed that Nguyen Van Chiem Street will be transformed into a street-food paradise from Monday, August 28.
Forty businesses operating during two ‘shifts,’ from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm on a daily basis, will treat customers to typical Vietnamese fare.
Sellers are only permitted to register as either food or drink vendors, not both, in order to ensure fair competition and benefits to each vendor.
Businesses are also limited to operating for one shift per day and are responsible for cleaning their stall after their shift ends. Portable hand washing stations will also be provided.
Nguyen Van Chiem Street lies between the Youth Culture House and Diamond Plaza, connecting Pham Ngoc Thach and Hai Ba Trung Streets.
Basic preparations for the opening have been completed by the participating businesses, including the acquisition of nametags, uniforms, aprons, gloves, plastics bowls and glasses.
Surveillance cameras will be installed along the food street to ensure order and safety. A test run of the new food street is expected to take place on Saturday.
Aside from the Nguyen Van Chiem Food Street, another outdoor food area is planned to open at Bach Tung Diep Park in District 1 in the near future.
Seventy households living under difficult economic circumstances will be allowed to run their businesses within the Bach Tung Diep Park food area.
