The sixth session of Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly commenced in Hanoi on Monday morning and is scheduled to last about a month, with its agenda including an election for the country’s new state president.

Running from October 22 to November 21, the sitting is chaired by National Assembly chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

According to the agenda of the session, which was approved at the preparatory meeting before the opening, delegates were scheduled to vote for the new state president on Monday afternoon.

The result of the election is expected to be announced at 3:00 pm on Tuesday.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong was previously nominated for the post during the eighth plenary meeting of the Party Central Committee in early October. No other candidates have been proposed for the job.

The new head of state will replace Tran Dai Quang, who passed away due to serious illness at the age of 62 on September 21.

If approved, General Secretary Trong will hold two leading titles.

Within the first week of the gathering, the legislature will also approve the dismissal of Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan and appointment of Nguyen Manh Hung for the post.

During the session, the lawmaking body is anticipated to adopt nine bills, one resolution, and give opinions on six other bills.

Delegates will also discuss and make decision on many important socio-economic issues of the country.

They will examine reports on the three-year implementation of the legislature’s resolutions on the 2016-20 socio-economic plan, economic restructuring, national finance and mid-term investment.

The socio-economic and state budget performance in 2018 and plans for 2019 will also come under scrutiny.

Three days will be dedicated to questions-and-answers session, with a focus on the government’s performance since the beginning of its tenure, the causes of uncompleted tasks, and solutions to address existing problems.
