South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol will pay an official state visit to Vietnam next week at the invitation of Vietnam’s State President Vo Van Thuong, the former’s office announced on Tuesday.
President Yoon will be accompanied by a 205-member business delegation during his visit to the Southeast Asian nation, which is scheduled to take place from June 22 to 26.
This will also be President Yoon's first bilateral visit to an ASEAN state member, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Vietnam and South Korea elevated their bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in December last year.
At that time, President Yoon affirmed that the new partnership would open a new chapter of the Vietnam-South Korea relations.
He also underlined cooperation with Vietnam on using advanced technology to stabilize supply chains and exploit rare earth materials in this Southeast Asian country.
The top official also attached great importance to cooperation in fields such as finance, information and communications, hi-tech, infrastructure development, and energy.
Prior to his visit to Vietnam, President Yoon will visit France from June 20 to 21 to attend a summit with French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as a general assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the international body in charge of overseeing the World Expo 2030, according to President Yoon’s deputy national security adviser, Kim Tae Hyo.
South Korea looks to promote its bid to host the expo through President Yoon’s upcoming visit.
The four candidate cities are Busan in South Korea, Rome in Italy, Odesa in Ukraine, and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.
The host country for the 2030 World Expo is expected to be selected in November this year.
