Vietnam is an extremely important partner of Canada, Canadian Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development Mary Ng told Ho Chi Minh City Chairman Phan Van Mai on Thursday.

Minister Ng affirmed that the potential for the cooperation between Vietnam and Canada remains huge.

She is on a visit to Vietnam, accompanied by a delegation of over 150 Canadian companies active in various fields such as agriculture, food processing, technology, and clean energy.

At the reception for the Canadian Minister, Chairman Mai underlined that the city attaches much significance to the economic, commercial and investment partnership.

He also expected her visit to help deepen the cooperation between Canada and Ho Chi Minh City.

Though two-way trade between the city and Canada has grown over the past few years, the figures remained modest, he said.

Meanwhile, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is bringing great benefits to Vietnam and Canada.

He also expressed his hope of boosting ties to increase bilateral trade in the coming time.

Besides, Mai called for cooperation between the city and Canada in the education and training aspect to contribute to improving the workforce during the global integration period.

“Many students in Ho Chi Minh City have opted to study in Canada, so we hope that the city will have more Canadian schools and universities,” Mai said.

Ng underscored that the Canadian government pledges US$2.3 billion for its further presence in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, in the next five years, asserting that Vietnam is a key trade partner of Canada.
