Vietnam's inter-agency working group for participation in United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations paid a visit to the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in Africa on Sunday (local time).
The working group, headed by Lieutenant General Pham Truong Son, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, was welcomed at a local airport by Brigadier Ameer Muhammad Umrani, UNISFA’s acting commander, and Senior Colonel Nguyen Viet Hung, head of the Vietnamese Engineering Unit Rotation 2.
Later on the same day, the working group went to the station of the Vietnamese Engineering Unit Rotation 2 in Highway Base, some three kilometers from the headquarters of UNISFA, to offer encouragement to the Vietnamese peacekeepers.
During the visit to the UNISFA, scheduled to take place from June 9 to 13, the Vietnamese working group will check the operations of the Engineering Unit Rotation 2 and its performance there to pave the way for further deployment of more Vietnamese officers to UN peacekeeping missions.
The Vietnamese delegation will also visit peacekeepers that other countries have dispatched to UNISFA, as well as learn from their experience in preparing and deploying troops to UN peacekeeping operations.
The delegation will meet with the authorities and people of the Abyei area so as to strengthen the bonds between the Vietnamese officers and the locals.
