China's Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping has sent congratulations to State President To Lam on his election as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Xi wrote in his congratulatory message that he was delighted to learn that To Lam had been elected to the position of Vietnam’s Party General Secretary.

“On behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and in my own name, I would like to extend my warm congratulations to you,” Nhan Dan (People) newspaper reported, citing the Vietnam News Agency.

The Chinese leader noted that in recent years, the Communist Party of Vietnam has fully embraced the principles of the 13th National Party Congress's Resolution, which has led to significant progress in Party building, advancing socialism, and furthering the renewal and open-door policies.

Xi voiced his belief in the leadership of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, saying that the Party and the people of Vietnam will successfully realize the objectives and tasks set forth by the 13th National Party Congress, steadily promoting the preparations for the 14th National Congress, and continuously moving toward the 'two 100-year goals' of the Party and the country's establishment.

China and Vietnam are socialist neighbors, Xi said, noting that he paid a state visit to the Southeast Asian country in December last year during which the two sides announced the building of a China-Vietnam community with a shared future that carries strategic significance, opening a new journey and a new chapter in the relationship between the two Parties and the two countries.

The Chinese Party chief and president added that he was ready to join Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam in leading the building of the China-Vietnam community in an increasingly substantial and in-depth manner, jointly promoting their traditional friendship, consolidating political trust, deepening strategic exchanges, boosting substantive cooperation, bringing more happiness to the peoples of the two countries, and actively contributing to the cause of peace and progress of all mankind.

"Wish you new achievements in your noble position," Xi wrote to Vietnam’s Party General Secretary To Lam.

The 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam elected State President To Lam as General Secretary for the 2021-26 term at a meeting on Saturday.

General Secretary To Lam will oversee the responsibilities of the Party Central Committee, Politburo, and Secretariat, in accordance with the powers and duties prescribed by the Politburo.

Earlier, the Politburo had also assigned President To Lam to manage the workload of the Party Central Committee, Politburo, and Secretariat while priority was given to then-Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s health and medical treatment.

Party General Trong passed away in Hanoi on July 19 at the age of 80.
