Top officials from Laos and Cuba have extended their condolences and sympathy to the government and people of Vietnam following the devastation caused by super typhoon Yagi, which battered the northern regions of the country over the weekend.

General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on Monday sent condolence messages to General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President of Vietnam To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh over significant human and property losses of the Vietnamese people due to the typhoon from Friday through Saturday last week.

In their messages, the top Lao leaders extended their heartfelt condolences to their Vietnamese counterparts, as well as to the Party, government, and people of Vietnam, especially the local authorities and families impacted by this natural disaster, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

They expressed their belief that under the leadership of the Vietnamese Party and government from the central to grassroots levels, the Vietnamese people would overcome this hardship and those in the affected areas would soon return to normal life.

On Tuesday morning, General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse arrived in Hanoi, commencing his four-day state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnam’s Party leader and State President To Lam.

The Lao president was accompanied by PM Sonexay Siphandone and other senior officials from the Lao Party and government.

Aside from the Lao leaders, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel also extended his deepest condolences to the Party, government, and people of Vietnam over the human and property losses induced by Yagi.

Through his X account, the Cuban president conveyed all the solidarity of the Caribbean nation to Vietnam during this challenging time.

Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba, also sent his condolences to the families of typhoon-hit victims in Vietnam.

While holding talks with General Secretary and State President To Lam in Hanoi on Monday, Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi expressed his solidarity and condolences to the people of Vietnam over the damage caused by the typhoon.

Several foreign embassies in Hanoi also conveyed their sympathy to the Vietnamese people for the losses caused by the storm.

On social media, some foreign diplomats shared images of themselves joining hands with Vietnamese authorities to carry out clean-up operations after the storm.

The arrival of typhoon Yagi in Vietnam has grabbed global media attention as it was a powerful storm before making landfall in the northern region on Saturday.

Typhoon Yagi was considered the most powerful storm to have battered the East Vietnam Sea over the past three decades.

The number of people dead and missing in Vietnam because of this typhoon had amounted to 146 as of 1:00 pm on Tuesday, according to a report from the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The typhoon, the third storm to strike Vietnam this year, killed 82 and left 64 others missing.
