Two more cold fronts will probably affect Ho Chi Minh City and other southern Vietnamese provinces this month, causing continued chilly mornings and nights due to the influence of cold air masses from the north, according to the southern regional hydro-meteorological center.

Recently, many residents in the southern metropolis have felt an unusual chill, especially in the early morning and at night.

Many families have been able to sleep comfortably without using fans or air conditioning, as nighttime temperatures have dropped to as low as 20 degrees Celsius -- a rare occurrence in the city, especially after the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

According to the southern weather agency, the city on Tuesday continued to experience cloudy skies throughout the day, with mild sunshine during daylight hours.

The lowest temperature recorded was 23 degrees Celsius, while daytime highs ranged between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius.

The relative humidity remained around 59 percent, and cloud cover was 85 percent.

Additionally, the UV index citywide reached a moderate to high level between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Tran Hong Lan, a resident of Thu Duc City, elaborated that post-Tet weather in Ho Chi Minh City is typically hot and dry, transitioning into the peak dry season.

However, this year, the cool mornings and evenings have persisted, making jackets a necessity for those going out.

While she appreciated the pleasant weather, she wondered whether this unusual pattern indicated climate anomalies.

Meteorologists explained that the recent chilly conditions in Ho Chi Minh City are due to continental high-pressure cold air masses extending from the north to the south.

In the next one to two days, this cold air mass is expected to gradually shift eastward, leading to warmer temperatures by Thursday.

However, another strong cold front is expected to arrive around mid-February, followed by another weaker cold spell later in the month.

Although the upcoming cold fronts will bring cooler temperatures, they will not be as intense as the recent cold snap.

Starting this month, salinity levels in rivers, canals, and estuaries in Ho Chi Minh City and other parts of southern Vietnam are expected to rise significantly, potentially leading to freshwater shortages for household use and agricultural production.

The salinity levels will possibly continue rising into March, impacting Mekong Delta provinces such as Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, and Ca Mau.
