Vietnamese Minister of National Defense General Phan Van Giang hosted a welcoming ceremony for and held talks with Lieutenant General Khrenin Viktor Gennadievich, Minister of Defense of Belarus, in Hanoi on Tuesday.
Minister Khrenin Viktor Gennadievich leads a high-level Belarusian defense delegation on an official visit to Vietnam and to attend the Vietnam International Defense Expo 2024 from December 16 to 19 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart.
General Giang thanked Belarus for its participation in the exhibition and emphasized Vietnam’s gratitude for the support provided by the Soviet Union, including Belarus, during its struggle for national liberation and reunification.
Giang highlighted the positive progress in the Vietnam-Belarus defense cooperation, which he said aligns with the strong traditional friendship and signed international agreements between the two nations.
The Vietnamese defense minister proposed that both nations further tighten collaboration in areas such as delegation exchange, military training, healthcare, military history, and defense communication.
He suggested that the Belarusian Ministry of Defense offer additional scholarships to Vietnamese military personnel and reiterated Vietnam’s readiness to host Belarusian officers for Vietnamese language and defense training courses.
Minister Khrenin welcomed these proposals aimed at deepening defense ties between the two nations.
He invited General Giang to visit Belarus and attend the Belarus International Defense Expo 2025.
He praised the Vietnam-Belarus bilateral ties and pledged close coordination to implement joint defense initiatives effectively.
The two defense leaders also exchanged views on global and regional issues of shared concern.
General Giang reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent stance on resolving maritime disputes through peaceful measures in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
He underscored Vietnam’s commitment to fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Vietnam Sea and work actively with other countries to finalize an efficient and substantive Code of Conduct for the waterway.
The two ministers also signed defense cooperation agreements during their meeting.
