An anti-terror rehearsal at sea involving about 400 soldiers, policemen and naval officers was carried out successfully at Chan May Port in Thua Thien-Hue Province yesterday. The drill, which was aimed at strengthening security at seaports, was jointly organized by the central province’s People’s Committee and the Vietnam Maritime Administration under the Transport Ministry. The drill was designed to include five parts: negotiations with terrorists; hostage rescue; mine and explosive disarming; fire extinguishing, search and rescue; and capturing terrorists at sea. The drill took place over two hours and ended successfully, ensuring absolute safety for people and technical equipment and meeting requirements on organization, command, direction, and coordination of different units in the drill. Speaking after the drill, Nguyen Nhat, director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, said, “In recent years, global security has experienced much instability, with disputes at sea increasing, and international terrorism and pirates becoming more sophisticated and widespread. This has led to seaports and boats at sea becoming targets of terrorists and pirates.” The drill, the second such exercise to be held so far, helps enhance awareness of maritime security and strengthen vigilance against terrorist and sabotage schemes, Nhat said.
