Deadly hole reemerges in HCMC downtown

Deadly hole reemerges in HCMC downtown

Sunday, June 30, 2013, 17:00 GMT+7

A deadly hole which was more than 3 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 1.5 meters deep was found on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia – Ham Nghi crossroads in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 on Saturday.

At the site, Tuoi Tre reporter noticed that the hole was expanding in size with the help of strong water flow beneath.

The surface of the road session started to sink, and then subsided after a truck passed it on the same day, said a xe om driver. Luckily, there were no vehicles falling into the hole.

An initial investigation showed that an underground water outflow from a nearby broken sewerage section undermined the underground soil structure at the site, leading to the subsidence.

This was not the first deadly hole in HCMC. In 2012, there were 4 holes found on two streets within only 20 days, slightly injuring two young people. The problem prompted concerned municipal state agencies to review the quality of the road.
