The event is part of the 21st Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit and related meetings in Bali, Indonesia from October 1 to 8. Among the meeting’s agenda is the APEC’s program on sustainable growth and fairness covering rural development, poverty reduction, promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises, economic empowerment to women, food and energy security, health care, maritime and technology innovations.Society -- High tides may submerge may submerge many areas in Ho Chi Minh City for several days starting today, the Southern Hydro-meteorological Station has warned. The provincial authorities and concerned agencies are handling the oil spill from the ship, which was on the way from Vung Ang Port, Ha Tinh province to Bangladesh, carrying 27,500 tons of clinker. -- Many localities, agencies, and businesses across the country have launched campaigns to support victims of Typhoon Wutip that hit central provinces on September 30. By yesterday HCMC offered a total of VND5 billion (US$236,000) to six affected provinces. Authorities of Quang Binh Province and Da Nang City gave VND19 billion and 1.7 billion respectively to the victims. The Party Committee of the Central Business Sector have raised nearly VND23 billion, and Bao Viet Insurance Group mobilized over VND500 million for the victims. -- Police in Can Tho City’s Ninh Kieu District have identified the mother of the newborn baby girl who was saved by local residents after being buried alive on Tuesday night in An Binh Ward. The woman who had abandoned her daughter said she could not afford to bring up the baby as her family is very poor while she has already had three children. Her husband, an assistant to mason, said he had not known that his wife buried the baby. -- Police in Hanoi are investigating the death of a boy who died after receiving treatment at a unlicensed clinic of Tran Duy Hung Street in Cau Giay District, Hanoi on September 30. The child, Nguyen Thanh Dat, of Nam Dinh Province, died at the clinic after a week of treatment. The clinic was suspended after the boy’s death.Business -- The Ho Chi Minh City Export Processing Zone and Industrial Park Authority (HEPZA) reported it has received new investments worth US$255 million in the first nine months of 2013, posting a 48 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Of the amount, $340 million was invested in foreign directly invested (FDI) enterprises, a 114.27 percent increase year on year. -- Ho Chi Minh City HCMC-based Saigontourist, one of the leading tourism corporations in Vietnam, said it will receive a total of 4,500 foreign travelers and crewmembers that will arrive in Vietnam within this month on three cruise ships. These tourists come from Italy, Spain, the UK, the US, and China.Lifestyle -- The film “Someone is going to forest”, a short movie directed by young Vietnamese director Truong Minh Quy, has entered the top 10 films at the 18th Busan International Film Festival that is taking place in Busan, South Korea.
