13 killed in fatal crash between passenger buses, truck in southern Vietnam

Thirteen people were killed in a fatal accident involving two passenger buses and a truck, which happened on Sunday morning in the south-central Vietnamese province of Binh Thuan.

A coach of Phuong Trang passenger bus line was travelling from the central province of Quang Ngai to Ho Chi Minh City on National Highway 1 at around 4:15 am, when it collided into another passenger bus running in the opposite direction.

Both buses burst into flame following the serious head-on collision, before a truck travelling from Ho Chi Minh City continued crashing into them. The truck driver managed to escape from his cabin.

The two passenger buses were burnt down entirely while the truck had its front heavily damage by the fire at the scene of the accident, with competent authorities attempting to pull the vehicles out.

According to preliminary information, 13 people were killed and 36 others injured.

Eighteen victims from the tragic accident had been admitted to the nearby Binh Thuan General Hospital, director of the infirmary, with one dead on arrival, Nguyen Huu Quang, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper at 7:30 am the same day.

Leaders of the provincial Party Committee, People’s Committee, and police department have arrived at the scene to supervise investigation into the case.

Local officials have decide to offer VND8 million (US$358.48) worth of financial support for each family of the deceased victims and VND3 million ($134.4) for those of the wounded, said Pham Van Nam, director of the Binh Thuan Department of Transport.

Competent authorities have not been able to identify the deceased victims as they were severely burnt by the fire.
