A driver for Phuong Trang, a popular Ho Chi Minh City-based bus line, sparked outrage after a video appearing to show the driver neglecting the steering wheel to focus on rolling a rice paper surfaced on Thursday.

The 39-second footage sent shivers down people’s spines as the driver is seen completely taking his hands off the steering wheel and leisurely wrapping the rice paper while the vehicle was sped down an expressway in Tien Giang Province.

The video was first posted on Facebook by one of the passengers, Tran Thanh V., who said he was traveling on the Phuong Trang passenger bus from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on June 5.

V. said the driver’s main priority seemed to be enjoying his meal, rather than the 40-seat bus he was meant to be driving.

The video generated thousands of views and shares on Facebook.

Futa Bus Lines, the operator of Phuong Trang passenger bus fleet, has confirmed the man in the video is one of its drivers, Giao Thong Van Tai (Transportation), a magazine run by the Ministry of Transport, reported on Thursday.

Dang Trong Hien, deputy general director of Futa Bus Lines, said the company has discussed the issue with the driver, who admitted his wrongdoing.

“The driver’s assistant was eating rice paper and invited the driver to enjoy it with him, which led to the incident,” Hien told Giao Thong Van Tai. “This driver has only worked for us for a few months and we have suspended him to verify the incident.

“We will levy strict penalties on any act that causes danger to passenger and ruins our reputation.”

In June 2015, a driver of Hoang Long Co., a long-haul bus operator based in the northern city of Hai Phong, was also caught in a video neglecting the hand wheel to focus on his socks and shoes while 40 passengers sat behind him.
