Doctors from a healthcare facility in the north-central Vietnamese province of Nghe An have successfully removed a huge ovarian cyst from a 102-year-old woman.

Pham Thi Tich, from Tuong Duong District, is being treated at Vinh City General Hospital after recovering from an operation to cut a huge cyst off her ovary on Wednesday.

“She is 102 years old, and thus the oldest person to have undergone such a surgery,” Nguyen Hong Truong, director of the hospital, said, adding that this is the first time the healthcare center has carried out a tumorectomy for such an elderly person.

The woman was hospitalized on Saturday and was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst, according to Truong, who was also in charge of the surgery.

The 25cm long, 20cm wide tumor weighed around 6kg, according to the surgeons, who said that they had to drain 1.5 liters of fluid from the cyst before taking it out of the patient’s stomach.

Tich’s present status is stable and she is about to be discharged, the hospital said.
