A truck driver from the north-central province of Nghe An has been arrested for drunk driving after causing an accident that killed three members of a family and left a fourth in a critical condition.

Pham Van Lai, 42, a resident of Hung Loc Commune, Vinh City, Nghe An Province, is being held in custody for traffic violations that led to serious consequences for a family, Major Tran Van Hung, deputy chief of the local police station, affirmed on Thursday afternoon.

According to the case file, Lai was driving a truck on the Ro Bridge in Thanh Chuong District, Nghe An, on Wednesday afternoon when he collided with a motorbike carrying four people traveling in the opposite direction.

The motorbike driver, Vo Van Tinh, 32, was carrying Vi Thi Hue, his 30-year-old wife, their seven-year-old son, Vo Van Hung Huy, and Nguyen Thi Xuan, Tinh’s 60-year-old mother.

The accident caused Hue and Xuan to be thrown off and instantly killed, while Huy later succumbed to critical injuries at the hospital.

Tinh is under intensive care at the Nghe An Hospital after having one of his legs separated from his body.

An initial police investigation showed that Lai’s blood alcohol was higher than the legal limit.

Post-mortem examinations were completed on Thursday morning and the bodies of the deceased have been returned to the family for funeral rituals.

Local authorities have offered the family VND5 million (US$221) for each of the deceased and VND3 million ($132.7) for the injured.
