Vietnamese police have broken up a drug ring as they attempted to smuggle some 15 kilograms of synthetic drugs into Vietnam from Laos.

The operation was busted on Sunday following a one-month investigation carried out by officers from the Department of Police in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa.

Three suspects have been apprehended; Cheo Thi Phoi, 37, Cheo Van Man, 41, both from the Lao province of Huaphanh, and Phan Thi Pham, 39, from Muong Lat District, Thanh Hoa.

The ring members were caught red-handed in Quang Chieu Commune, a locality in Muong Lat District, which borders Laos.

Officers confiscated 15 kilograms of synthetic drugs and other relevant evidence at the scene.

The case is considered the largest synthetic drug smuggling bust that local police have ever made.

Preliminary information revealed that the two Laotian suspects were in regular contact with their Vietnamese accomplices with regard to the transport of the illicit material over the border.

Further investigations are being conducted by local police officers.
