A man convicted of murder for killing his mother and concealing her body in a well in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum was put to death by lethal injection on Friday.

Nguyen Manh Duong, 38, was handed the capital punishment by a local court shortly after the shock murder in 2013.

The death penalty has been executed using lethal injection, Kon Tum police confirmed on Friday.

According to the case file, on June 22, 2013, intoxicated Duong returned home after a drinking party and asked his mother, Le Thi Cu, for some money. Cu rejected the request and instead scolded her son.

Feeling enraged, Duong went to the kitchen, took a knife, and stabbed multiple times onto his mother’s head.

The 58-year-old woman desperately tried to run away. However, Duong managed to slash his knife onto her leg, causing the mother to fall down.

The son then grabbed a meter-long wooden stick and repeatedly beat his mother until she completely collapsed.

Following the killing, Duong wrapped the body of his mother into several sacks, plastic bags, raincoats, and blankets before throwing the corpse into the well in front of his house.

Duong then put up the house for sale at VND250 million (US$11,000) with the intention of getting some money before running away.

The murder was not discovered until July 2, 2013, when the hidden body began to enter a heavily decomposed state.

The horrifying killing left the whole neighborhood, a tight-knit remote commune in Kon Tum, in shock.

Vietnam began using lethal injection to execute capital punishment in July 2011, replacing the shooting execution.
