Six pairs of foreign swans have been released to Hoan Kiem Lake in Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi in a pilot project to raise such birds locally.
The swans, black and white, come from Belgium, and possess characteristics enabling them to adapt well to Vietnamese climate, Vo Tien Hung, director of the Hanoi Sewage and Drainage Limited Company, said on Monday.
The firm has already formulated a plan to take care of and protect the birds from harm and theft, Hung added.
The keeping of such a species is supported by local biologists, the director said.

If the swans can survive well, more will appear on the lake as a decoration and tourist attraction, he added.
The animals, surrounded by a net, are observed to have been agile, sturdy, and able to swim freely around the 100-square-meter region of the lake while approaching the shore for food of their own accord.
