2-year-old boy dies at unlicensed daycare in Nha Trang

A two-year-old boy has been found dead at an unlicensed childcare facility in the south-central Vietnamese province of Khanh Hoa.

The young boy, Do Duy Khang, died after falling into a bucket of water at a daycare owned by Le Thi Luyen in Phuoc Dong Commune, Nha Trang City on Wednesday.

Khang was the son of Do Thi Bich Vy, 35, Luyen’s neighbor.

According to preliminary information, Vy brought her child to Luyen’s house on Wednesday morning before heading to work, where he joined five other children.

At around 9:30 am, Luyen was cooking the meal in the kitchen while the kids were playing by themselves.

The woman later noticed Khang’s absence. When she found him, he was trapped upside down in a 60-centimeter-high bucket of water.

He was immediately brought to the medical center in Phuoc Dong Commune but his heart had already stopped beating.

According to Dang Loi, chairman of the Phuoc Dong People’s Committee, there are seven legitimate childcare centers in the commune, and Luyen’s facility is not one of them.

“Many parents in the locality often let neighbors babysit their children while they go to work. The operations run by these people are unlicensed,” Loi elaborated.

“It is a very difficult situation to manage.”
