A Spanish man and a French woman have been killed after they crashed into a semi-trailer truck while riding a motorbike in the northern Vietnamese province of Ha Giang.

The fatal accident happened at around 4:30 pm on Monday along a section of National Highway 2 in Dao Duc Commune, Vi Xuyen District, the provincial Traffic Safety Committee confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday.

The truck, driven by 46-year-old Pham Van Nhuan, was traveling from the Binh Vang Industrial Park toward neighboring Tuyen Quang Province when it hit the two foreigners riding a motorcycle in the opposite direction.

The head-on crash caused the two motorcyclists to be seriously injured. The motorbike was also severely damaged.

They were admitted to a local hospital for emergency treatment but the man had passed away on the way to the infirmary.

The woman was later transferred to the Ha Giang Province General Hospital but she also succumbed to her injuries.

Initial information showed that the victims were Pena Laigesia Alvaro, a 30-year-old man from Spain, and Moreaux Ophelie, 32, a French national.

Further investigation is ongoing.
