A hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has began experimenting with a motorcycle ambulance service as part of its effort to reduce emergency response time in a city inundated with narrow alleys and crowded streets.

The Saigon General Hospital is giving the project, the first of its type in Vietnam, a two-week run to test its effectiveness.

The motorbikes it uses carry first-aid kits, sedatives, intravenous fluids, medicine to suppress abnormal cardiac rhythms, and emergency care equipment such as tracheal tubes, heart rate monitors, and defibrillators.

The vehicles will be deployed for patients who live in alleys which are inaccessible by standard ambulances or when there is serious congestion in the downtown area where the hospital is located.

The emergency unit also includes the infirmary’s doctors and nurses.

If the project is deemed successful, the Saigon General Hospital and other medical institutions in the city are expected to use motorcycles for patients in need of immediate critical care.
