A high school teacher in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta has admitted to having a romantic and sexual relationship with a tenth-grader and even asking the young girl to have an abortion after she was impregnated by him last year.
Ninh Thanh Vien, deputy director of the Department of Education and Training in Kien Giang Province, confirmed on Wednesday that the agency has been coordinating with investigators to probe the alleged criminal violation of Nguyen Van Chinh, 55.
Chinh is a math teacher at Soc Son High School, located in the namesake town in Hon Dat District of Kien Giang.
In a report submitted to competent authorities, the teacher claimed he and Tran Hong Th., a tenth grade student at the school, had been involved in a romantic relationship for more than a year.
According to Chinh, Th. was the first to make a move when she texted him a holiday greeting message on Reunification Day (April 30) in 2018.
After that day, the two began exchanging text messages and going out, he said.
They had their first sexual intercourse in May the same year, the teacher claimed.
Th. found out she had got pregnant in December, and Chinh took her to a local clinic to get an abortion.
After the incident, they continued dating and having sex with each other until Th.’s family recently found out about their relationship.
The girl’s family has accused Chinh of manipulating Th., who was under 16 years old as of May 2018, into having sex with him.
According to Vietnam’s Penal Code, having sex with a person under 16 years old is punishable by one to five years in prison, or up to ten years if the victim is impregnated as a result of the act.
