Authorities in the central city of Da Nang are looking for a Canadian man who went missing in the Son Tra Peninsula after leaving what appears to be a suicide note.
Private papers belonging to Mallarky Mark Montgomery, 52, from Canada, along with a mobile phone and VND3 million (US$130.3) in cash, were found in the storage compartment of an abandoned motorbike found in Son Tra on Monday.
Montgomery had previously been reported missing to police in My An Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District on November 9.
Montgomery’s family, who have been unable to contact him for more than a week, said they also found a letter and a video in which the Canadian said he was contemplating suicide, and that he intended to do it in Son Tra.
The management board of the Son Tra Peninsula and tourism beaches in Da Nang has launched a search for the Canadian national in coordination with local border guards, rescue forces, and the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center Zone 2.
Montgomery’s whereabouts remained unknown as of Friday afternoon, according to Nguyen Duc Vu, head of the management board.
Montgomery arrived in Da Nang on June 20 and has rented an apartment in Son Tra District to stay with his Russian wife, VnExpress reported.
The online news site also said that Montgomery has a niece who lives in the central Vietnamese city.
He would ride his motorbike to the Son Tra Peninsula and spend three to four hours there meditating since his arrival in Da Nang, according to Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper.
