A male patient in Ho Chi Minh City is now in a critical condition after he allegedly attempted to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head, with his family member claiming he had lost VND3 billion (US$129,000) to a scam.
Police officers in District 10 have been working with managers of Trung Vuong Hospital to verify the incident that happened on Sunday evening.
The patient, a 41-year-old man named D., was first admitted to the infirmary on the early morning of the same day for emergency treatment, said Dr. Le Thanh Chien, the hospital’s director.
In the evening, he talked to one of the doctors before pulling out a gun and shooting himself in the head.
The shot was not fatal, but D. suffered severe blood loss.
The man has been given emergency care for his serious wound, Dr. Chien stated, adding that his prognosis is very poor.
According to D.’s mother, he was previously a real estate businessman and has recently developed signs of depression.
A few months ago, D. lost VND3 billion to scammers who had tricked him into buying a land plot in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
“D. told me he was okay and that he could start it all over again,” the mother recalled.
On early Sunday morning, D. was taken to Trung Vuong Hospital after he was found to have taken nearly 100 sleeping pills in a suicide attempt, she added.
